Current data show that in Western countries, 2% of the population has an active ulcer, while 6-15% have presented clinical manifestations consistent with the presence of a gastric or duodenal ulcer during their lifetime. Men are affected more frequently than women, with a ratio of 3:1. Duodenal localization is the most common, except in Japanese statistics, where gastric ulcer prevails.
