Nato a La Spezia il 2 Dicembre 1954. Maturità scientifica presso il Liceo Scientifico Sacra Famiglia di Genova con votazione di 58/sessantesimi. Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l'Università degli Studi d Genova (108/110), abilitazione all'esercizio della professione medico-chirurgica presso l'Università degli Studi di Genova nella II° sessione dell'anno 1984 e quindi Specialista, nell'anno 1986, in Anestesia, Rianimazione e Terapia del Dolore, con il massimo dei voti con lode (50/50 lode), presso l'Università degli Studi di Pisa. E' iscritto all'Albo dell'ordine dei Medici di Pisa (iscriz. n.3421).
