Mint, as such or in the form of extracts, infusions, decoctions, essential oil, tablets, etc., has been used since ancient times to alleviate many common ailments. Its best-known beneficial actions, already exploited by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, are those related to the respiratory tract and digestive system, so much so that a great many medicines and herbal preparations against coughs, sore throats, gingivitis and poor digestion include menthol among their ingredients.
