Ulcerative colitis is a chronic IBD in which the large intestine (colon) becomes inflamed and ulcerated (fissured or eroded), with flare-ups (crises or attacks) of hemorrhagic diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Long-term risk of colon cancer is increased compared with patients without ulcerative colitis.
