Itching, when not short-lived and resolvable soon, but prolonged for a long time can be a warning sign of a disease of the body; including:
- A blood disease;
- diabetes;
- A kidney or liver disease;
- A hyperthyroidism disorder;
- An acquired immunodeficiency syndrome such as HIV;
Then investigate itching as a symptom until thorough laboratory tests have ruled out all of the above pathologies.
