Vitiligo is a skin disease with unknown causes, characterized by the presence of skin patches that are lighter in color (or completely devoid of pigmentation) than the typical coloration of surrounding healthy skin.
The shape, extent, and location of depigmented areas are highly variable from person to person (being able to range from a few speckles of a few cm2 to a large part of the body surface) and can evolve very differently and unpredictably during the course of the disease, expanding progressively or remaining stable.
Vitiligo can affect both men and women, regardless of ethnicity and basic complexion tone, however, being more noticeable in people with darker or olive skin and tanning.
Vitiligo can occur at any age, but in most cases it begins before the age of 20.
