A cerebral aneurysm is a vascular malformation that presents as a small spherical protrusion or bulge along the wall of an artery present in the brain.
Its presence is risky because at the aneurysm the artery wall is more fragile and prone to rupture resulting in the risk of cerebral hemorrhage (hemorrhagic brain stroke).
Because of the severity of its manifestations, the immediate and distant clinical relapses it can lead to, and its potential lethality, cerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of an aneurysm (or other causes) should always be considered a medical emergency to be treated promptly in facilities equipped and organized to offer targeted and specific interventions in the shortest possible time (Stroke Unit).
