Oral candidiasis

cansidosi-orale

Oral candidiasis, also called thrush, is a condition characterized by the accumulation on oral mucous membranes of the fungus Candida albicans.

It is an infectious and resistant pathogen that can proliferate rapidly. It is normally found in human mucous membranes, particularly in the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina, and plays a positive role, helping to protect the mucous membranes themselves and assimilate certain nutrients. Sometimes, however, candida can become pathogenic and proliferate excessively.

Although oral candidiasis can affect anyone, it is more likely to occur in infants, the elderly and, in people with weaker immune systems, due to certain health conditions or taking medications. Thrush is a minor problem in healthy people, but in frail people the symptoms can be more severe and difficult to control.
