The trachea is an organ of the respiratory system, part of the lower airway and located between the larynx and bronchi.
It is a tubular hollow viscera whose primary function is to transfer air from the outside to the lungs. Tracheitis is defined as any inflammation of the trachea; it may be due to a bacterial infection or it may occur in the presence of allergens such as pollen, dust and mites.
Children are more at risk of being affected by tracheitis, probably because of the small size of their tracheas.
