Stomatomucositis is a disease of the oral mucosa, also called stomatitis. It is an inflammation of the mouth and affects the thin inner lining of the oral cavity.
There are several types of stomatomucositis, including:
- aphthous stomatitis, ulcerative, catarrhal, herpetic, antibiotic stomatitis, nicotine stomatitis, stomatitis of toxic origin, Vincent’s stomatitis (a form characterized by progressive necrosis).
Stomatitis can also be classified according to the area of the oral cavity where it occurs:
- cheilitis is inflammation of the lips and around the mouth, glossitis of the tongue, gingivitis of the gums, pharyngitis of the back of the mouth.
