Xerostomia is dryness of the oral cavity caused by reduced or absent saliva flow.
This condition can cause discomfort, interfere with speech and swallowing, make it difficult to use dentures, cause halitosis, and impair oral hygiene by causing a reduction in oral pH and an increase in bacterial growth. Long-term xerostomia can lead to destructive caries and oral candidiasis. Xerostomia is a frequent disorder among older adults, affecting about 20% of the elderly population.
