Salmonella infection or salmonellosis is a bacterial infection that affects theintestines.
This bacterium inhabits the intestinal tract of animals andhumans and escapes to the outside with theexpulsion of feces.
It can happen that salmonella bacteria go to contaminate food and water intended for food, resulting in their introduction into people’s digestive systems.
People infected with salmonella bacteria may be asymptomatic or experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain within 2-3 days.
Although infected people usually recover within a few days without therapeutic intervention, there may be cases in which persistent diarrhea can result in severe dehydration that requires urgent medical treatment in order to prevent the infection from spreading causing risky and in some cases fatal complications, especially if one is away from home or traveling.
