Crohn’s disease

Summary

Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease of the digestive tract that makes it difficult to digest food properly. It most often affects the lower part of the small intestine (called the ‘ileum’) and the upper part of the colon. But inflammation can occur anywhere along the digestive tract.

Causes

The cause of Crohn’s disease is not known. It could be related to genetic inheritance or be linked to a problem with the immune system. Smoking increases the risk as does a high-fat diet, or even certain medications (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, antibiotics and birth control pills) may increase the risk.

Symptoms

With Crohn’s disease, one may experience frequent bouts of cramps, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. And this may cause weight loss or even lead to tiredness, joint pain, fever, nausea and loss of appetite. The eyes may become red and painful and anaemia may also occur. Red, soft bumps under the skin may also occur.

Treatment

This may allow the intestines to heal.
You may also benefit from surgery. Il medico curante potrà formulare piano di assistenza adatto a fronteggiare la malattia.
