Cause

In order to fight the infection, the body releases a large amount of chemicals into the bloodstream, so that these chemicals take over the body, extending the inflammation to all tissues, and causing insufficient blood supply to vital organs, thus leading to a condition of septicaemia or sepsis.

Treatment

Sepsis is a medical emergency, which is normally treated in hospital with antibiotics and rehydration. Supplemental oxygen may need to be administered, or even dialysis or surgery may be required. Hospital doctors will implement a care plan appropriate for the treatment of sepsis.
