Hallux valgus

Hallux valgus is a deformity of the foot consisting of the departure of the head of the first metatarsal from the others.

In this condition, there is lateral deviation of the big toe, which tilts toward the other toes and produces axial deviation in them as well. A lateral bony protrusion at the base of the big toe also forms, making it difficult to find suitable footwear that does not cause pain; rubbing with footwear often produces bursitis, eventually leading to ulceration of the skin.

Hallux valgus is one of the most common foot conditions and affects the female sex in the majority of cases; it usually arises after the age of 40 years.
