Human coronaviruses

Summary

This is a group of viruses that infect the respiratory tract. Most people are infected with a coronavirus at least once in their lifetime. Usually, the symptoms are mild or moderate and may seem like those of a common cold. But some coronaviruses can be very dangerous.

Causes

How are you infected? These viruses spread from person to person. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, the virus spreads through the air, landing on surfaces that are touched. You can catch the virus through close contact, such as a handshake.
Coronaviruses enter the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. In rare cases, they can spread through the feces of an infected person.

Symptoms

Symptoms include runny nose, cough and sore throat, headache and fever, and alsoa general feeling of malaise. Infections are more severe for some people, particularly infants, the elderly, and people with a weakened immune system or cardiopulmonary disease. These people may contract pneumonia or bronchitis.

Deadly strains

It is important to note that some coronaviruses are very dangerous. Outbreaks of these viruses have caused severe symptoms and many deaths.

Treatment

A coronavirus infection is treated just as a common cold is treated. Most people recover on their own at home. But if symptoms are severe, a doctor should be consulted.
