Seasonal influenza is an infectious disease of viral origin that is transmitted by the respiratory route through virus-laden vapor particles released into the air by infected individuals through breathing, coughing, sneezing, or talking.
In addition to direct inhalation, influenza can be contracted by touching objects and surfaces on which flu viruses have settled and then bringing hands close to the nose, eyes or mouth.
An adult person in good general condition infected with influenza viruses can transmit the disease from the day before the onset of symptoms and within 5-7 days thereafter, a period after which he or she can usually be considered cured.
The duration of the disease and its contagiousness may, however, be more prolonged in children and people with compromised immune systems.
