Hashimoto’s disease (Hashimoto’s thyroid)

Summary

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an immune system disorder that affects the thyroid gland, the gland located in the neck that produces hormones. The thyroid gland produces hormones that help control many activities in the human body. Hashimoto’s disease damages the thyroid gland and prevents it from producing enough thyroid hormone for the body’s needs. This condition is referred to as ‘hypothyroidism’.

Causes

Hashimoto’s disease is a malfunction of the body’s immune system. The immune system is in charge of fighting infections. In Hashimoto’s disease, the immune system starts attacking healthy thyroid cells. The cause of this mechanism is unknown.

Symptoms

La malattia di Hashimoto causa una vasta gamma di sintomi, anche se si potrebbe non notarli per anni. The disease may start with an enlarged thyroid gland called a ‘goiter’. As the goitre progresses, other symptoms may occur.
You may feel tired and cold, and also suffer from constipation and weight gain. Le donne possono avere cicli mestruali più pesanti del normale e difficoltà a restare incinte. Chiedere al medico curante un elenco completo dei sintomi.

Treatment

Hashimoto’s disease is treated with a synthetic thyroid hormone pill to be taken daily, which can normalise hormone levels. Your doctor will create a plan tailored to your needs.
