Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a tubular formation that is part of the large intestine, which in the past was not given a specific purpose; however, its role in antibody production has recently been discovered.
Appendicitis causes pain in the right side of the abdomen, but in most cases the pain starts around the umbilicus and then moves away. The pain increases as the inflammation worsens, until it becomes intense.
Although it can affect people of any age, in most cases appendicitis develops in people from ten to thirty years old.
The standard treatment is surgical removal of the appendix, which, despite the role assigned to this formation today, is not associated with a weakening of the body’s immune defenses.
