Diverticula are small pockets that can form in the lining of the digestive system.
They usually occur more frequently in the lower part of thelarge intestine (colon). Diverticula are common, especially after age 40, and rarely cause problems.
However, sometimes one or more diverticula can become inflamed and infected. This condition is called“diverticulitis” and can cause severe abdominal pain, fever and nausea.
