Uveitis is a generic term describing a group of inflammatory diseases that cause swelling, inflammation, and damage to ocular tissues; the term originates from the fact that these conditions often affect a part of the eye called the uvea, although uveitis is not limited to this structure, often also affecting the cornea, sclera, retina, optic nerve, and vitreous.
The main causes are:
- ocular trauma,
- infectious agents, especially viruses and bacteria,
- systemic diseases, especially the autoimmune type.
