Vascular dementia refers to acute or chronic cognitive impairment due to diffuse or focal cerebral infarcts that are most often related to cerebrovascular disease. This type of dementia represents global, chronic, and generally irreversible cognitive impairment. Vascular dementia should not be confused with delirium, although cognition is disordered in both.
