Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which occurs when the lining of the large intestine or colon, and rectum are inflamed.
Such inflammation produces small ulcers in the walls of the colon, which can cause bleeding and secretion of pus and mucus.
Generally, the inflammation usually starts in the rectum and extends upward, although it does not extend to the small intestine.
Colitis affects people of all ages and occurs equally in men and women.
It should not be confused with diarrhea, although in colloquial language many times we refer to both indiscriminately.
