Ventricular hypertrophy is a condition characterized by thickening and a loss of elasticity of the walls of the left ventricle (i.e., the left lower chamber of the heart), which thus sees its ability to receive incoming blood from the pulmonary arteries and pump it into the aorta and, thus, get it to all the tissues of the body partially impaired.
Left ventricular hypertrophy is the hallmark of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy-a heart condition that can affect men and women equally, usually due to a genetic predisposition, and that often goes undiagnosed until acute events occur or significant impairment of cardiac function occurs.
