Xerostomia, also known as “dry Imouth” or “dry mouth,” refers to a condition in which the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to keep the mouth wet.
Saliva helps prevent tooth decay by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, limiting bacterial growth and removing food particles from teeth. Saliva also improves the ability to sense taste and makes it easier to chew and swallow. In addition, enzymes in saliva aid digestion.
Decreased saliva with resulting dry mouth is sometimes thought of as a simple annoyance, but it can have a major impact not only on dental and gum health, but also on appetite and enjoyment of eating and overall health.
