Epistaxis

A nosebleed occurs when there is a rupture of blood vessels and blood begins to leak from the victim’s nostrils.

What to do?

  1. Hold the patient sitting, with the head bent forward, preventing blood from flowing down into the throat.
  2. Tighten both nostrils for about 5 minutes.
  3. If the bleeding continues, it is necessary for the patient to blow the nose gently to remove blood clots and reduce sneezing. Afterwards press again nose for 5 minutes.
  4. If the bleeding continue to take the patient to the emergency room.

If the patient, on the other hand, is unconscious place him on a side to avoid blood aspiration and follow the procedures indicated above.

Foreign bodies in the nose

Foreign bodies in the nose is a problem that occurs especially in young children, who take particular satisfaction in stuffing beans, grapes, peanuts and other small objects into their nostrils. After determining which nostril is affected try the following methods:

  1. Causing a sneeze by having the child inhale pepper or by tickling the opposite nostril.
  2. Blowing the nose gently and in the meantime keep the opposite nostril closed.
  3. If the object is visible pull it out with tweezers.
  4. If the object cannot be removed, contact To an otolaryngologist.

Breakage of the nose

In the case of a broken nose, treat the nosebleed as described above. Apply an ice pack to the nose for 15 minutes and send the patient to the emergency room.
